Grocery store, hotel planned in Hugoton
Stevens County is getting two new businesses.
Land has been purchased for a grocery store and Best Western Plus in Hugoton.
Neal Gillespie, economic development director for Stevens County, said a feasibility study was conducted by Spurrier Consulting, Gautier, Miss., that indicated the area could support a higher-end hotel. Currently, there are no franchise or chain hotels in Hugoton, he said.
"It's progress," said Neal Gillespie, economic development director for Stevens County. "We have been concerned that we were losing a lot of the high-end market on the lodging, and hopefully, that would address that issue."
Additionally, Justin Carter, owner of Carter's Thriftway in Ulysses, has purchased land in Stevens County on which he hopes to build a new grocery store.
Carter has the Ulysses store for two years. The new store is still in the planning stages. He said he's working with Stevens County and hopes to start on the store as soon as possible.
Ulysses and Hugoton are 27 miles apart. "I'm from there (Hugoton). I graduated high school from there. It's a good community, a solid community. We feel like we can have an opportunity there," Carter said.
