Joan LaVerne O'Brate, 81, of Topeka, died Thursday, July 3, 2014, following a brief illness.

Joan LaVerne O'Brate, 81, of Topeka, died Thursday, July 3, 2014, following a brief illness.

She was born Oct. 1, 1932, in Garden City, to Earl and LaVerne Cook. She graduated from Garden City High School.

Mrs. O'Brate taught English, American Government and Library in Mulvane, Towanda, Winfield, Granada, Colo., and Syracuse before retiring in 1995. A former resident of Syracuse, she had lived in Topeka since 2001.

On Dec. 27, 1953, she married Tony O'Brate in Garden City. He survives. Other survivors include her children, Jennifer Roberts of Woodbridge, Va., and Greg O'Brate, Joellyn O'Brate and Martin O'Brate, all of Topeka; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Jean Murry of Coffeyville, Okla., Janet Bowlby of Garden City, and Judy Taldo of Park City.

Burial will be at Syracuse City Cemetery at a later date.

Memorials are suggested to the Syracuse First United Methodist Church Scholarship Fund or American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are being handled by Dove Cremation, Topeka.
