No school Friday for USD 457 students

There will be no school for Garden City Public Schools Friday. Friday is a scheduled teacher workday in the morning and a new teacher inservice during the afternoon. The district offices and facilities will be open with regular business hours on Friday. Classes will be back in session on Monday.

Pizza and Movie Night set for Saturday night

A Pizza and Movie Night will begin at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Church of the Brethren, 505 N. Eighth St.

The featured film will be "The Secrets of Jonathan Sperry," which take place in the summer of 1970 and chronicles three 12-year-olds developing a unique friendship with 75-year-old Jonathan Sperry.

The movie, popcorn and beverages are free. Donations will be taken for the pizza.

HPPR to host guitar concert Friday

Award-winning finger style guitarist Adam Gardino and vocalist Kelly Champlin, both of Denver, Colo., are scheduled to play a concert Friday evening in Garden City.

The doors for the show open at 7 p.m. Friday at High Plains Public Radio, 210 N. Seventh St., with music starting at 7:30. The concert is part of the Living Room Concert Series and has a suggested donation of $10 per person.

Entertainment set for Scott City dance

"The Blue Notes" will entertain for a dance Friday at the senior center in Scott City.

The dance, which is open to the public, will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Applications taken for nonprofit award

The High Plains Grant Makers 2012 Non-Profit Leader Award online application is now available at http://www.highplainsgrantmakers.org.

The purpose of this biennial award is to recognize and reward an outstanding nonprofit leader in Finney County. To be eligible, nominees must work or volunteer extensively with a 501(c)3 organization in Finney County and be at least 18 years old.

The winner will be honored at a celebration in March and will receive $2,500 to be used for professional development, paid to the organization. Nominations must be submitted by 5 p.m. on Feb. 24. For more information, call the Western Kansas Community Foundation at 276-3032. HPGM is a collaboration between WKCF, Finney County United Way, Kemper Foundation and the Finnup Foundation with the goal of helping local agencies be more efficient and to help make philanthropy more effective.

Huelskamp accepting internship applications

Congressman Tim Huelskamp is now accepting applications for internships for summer 2012.

Interested college-aged students are invited to apply to serve the people of the First District either in the Dodge City, Hutchinson, Salina or the Washington, D.C. office.

The internships are unpaid but provide valuable work experience. More information and an application can be found at http://huelskamp.house.gov/internships. The application deadline is March 15.
