Dorothy Hawkins

Dorothy Mae Hawkins, 76, died Friday, Feb. 24, 2012, at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan.
She was born Sept. 15, 1935, in Bluff City, to Louis and Hedvika Jelinek Baker. She attended Southwestern College in Winfield, where she was a soloist with the Purple Robed Choir and graduated with a bachelor's degree in music education. She later earned a master's degree in counseling from Emporia State University.
Mrs. Hawkins worked as a teacher and school counselor for 37 years, moving to Garden City in 2001. She was a member and circle leader of the First United Methodist Church. She also belonged to the Finney County Retired Persons Association, Kansas National Education Association and National Education Association.
On Dec. 27, 1963, she married William Hawkins in Caldwell. He died April 6, 1997, in Morrowville. She also was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Kathryn Mayo.
Survivors include a daughter, Jennifer White and husband Paul of Kansas City, Mo.; a brother, Robert Baker and wife Betty of Bluff City; three grandsons, Trail, William and Gregor White of Kansas City, Mo.; a nephew, H.D. Mayo and wife Mickey of Bluff City; and a niece, Wanda Wencl and husband Bryon of Bluff City.
A memorial service will begin at 1 p.m. Sunday at the First United Methodist Church in Garden City. Burial will be at DeVore Cemetery in Bluff City.
