Jon Axelson

Jon Kevin "Smiley" Axelson, 51, of Russell, died Monday, March 11, 2013, at the University Of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kan.

He was born Dec. 4, 1961, in Hays, to John W. and Wendella F. Matheson Axelson. He graduated from Natoma High School in 1980.

On June 6, 1981, he married Maureen Axelson in Plainville.

In 1987, Mr. Axelson went to work for Murfin Drilling. He was promoted to production foreman in 1992 and was transferred to Colby and then Garden City before eventually moving to Russell in 2000.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Morgan and Zach Axelson; two sisters, Pam Launchbaugh of Pratt, and Kathy Raney of Rose Hill; and a grandson. He was preceded in death by his father.

A celebration of the funeral Mass will begin at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Russell. Burial will follow at Natoma City Cemetery.

Visitation hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell. A vigil will begin at 7 tonight at the church. Memorials are suggested to the St. Mary's Church Building Fund, in care of the mortuary, 610 N. Maple, Russell, KS 67665.
