Amidst the final countdown to his last day in office, Gov. Jeff Colyer officially appointed Trista Joyce, accounting supervisor at Golden Plains Credit Union in Garden City, as Finney County treasurer this week, falling in line with the local Republican Party’s recommendation.

Former County Treasurer Kelly Drees submitted her resignation letter in December, leaving the position almost exactly halfway through her four-year term.

Because Drees ran for the position as a Republican, the Finney County Republican Party, per state statute, had to fill the opening within 21 days of receiving her resignation letter. Party precinct committee members voted for their choice among three candidates on Jan. 2, ultimately selecting Joyce.

On Tuesday, the same day Drees officially vacated her position, Colyer signed off on Joyce as her replacement. Joyce received a letter notifying her of Colyer’s approval on Thursday.

Joyce said she will likely be sworn in on Jan. 17 alongside the county commissioners and clerk and start on Jan. 28. In the meantime, she said, she will be in close contact with the Treasurer’s Office and Deputy County Treasurer Idania Hernandez, who will run the office on-site until Joyce arrives.

“I’m just excited and ready to get in there and assess what’s going on in the office and work with the staff,” Joyce said.
