get first win

The first win of the James Cottage era of Bethel College men’s soccer came Wednesday with a 2-1 win over Avila Wednesday in KCAC play.

Bethel has gone 20 games without a win, 0-18-2 in that span.

Jose Rojas scored the game winner in the 83rd minute on a free kick. Bethel took the lead in the 13th minute on a Chris Torres goal. Avila tied the game in the 41st minute on a goal by Ethan Francis with an assist from Jonathan Lopez.

Bethel held a 15-12 advantage in shots, 7-4 on goal. Kobi Russom had two saves for Bethel. Patrick Elliott had five saves for Avila, 3-9-1 overall and 3-4 in KCAC play.

Bethel is 1-10-2, 1-5-2 in KCAC play, and plays at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Kansas Wesleyan.

The Bethel College women’s soccer team snapped a six-game winless streak with a 1-0 win over Avila Wednesday night in Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference play at Joe W. Goering Field in North Newton.

Alayna Wallace knocked in a Bekah Tonn corner kick in the 55th minute to give the Threshers the win.

Shots were even at 14. Avila held an 8-3 advantage in shots on goal. Caitlin Cordes had eight saves in goal for the clean sheet win. Madison Baker had two saves for Avila.

Avila falls to 3-10-1, 2-5-1 in KCAC play.

Bethel is 3-8-1, 2-5-1 in KCAC play, and plays at 5 p.m. Saturday at Kansas Wesleyan.
