A motorcyclist sustained critical injuries Wednesday evening after being struck by a car that failed to yield, Topeka police said.

The crash occurred about 6:20 p.m. in the 2100 block of S.E. 25th Street.

Lt. Aaron Jones said a black Harley-Davidson motorcyclist traveling east was struck by a westbound Mercury Sable making a left turn into the Walmart parking lot. He said the Mercury failed to yield to the motorcycle.

The motorcyclist was thrown in the collision and sustained serious injuries, Jones said.

The motorcyclist was identified as Joshua Anderson, 39, of Topeka. The driver of the Sable was Matthew Pope, 21, of Topeka, police said.

As of Thursday morning, Anderson was still in critical condition.

An accident reconstruction team was investigating the scene.

S.E. 25th Street was closed between S.E. California and S.E. Burr during the investigation, Jones said.
