Saint Francis Community Services will kick off a free 10-week informational course for families interested in caring for children in foster care or adoption programs next week, exploring kids’ needs, parenting techniques and available resources and support services.

The course will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Kansas Department for Children and Families office, 1110 JC St., Garden City. The course will offer information and a state-required training for potential foster parents.

According to the Saint Francis Foundation, at least 10 new Finney County foster families are needed to accomodate local children in need. According to the foundation, 20 children from the county currently must live outside of it because of a lack of foster families.

Those interested in registering for the course or learning about becoming a foster parent can visit www.fostercare-ks.org or call (866) 999-1599.
