Dena Sattler was honored for Best Editorial in the 2018 National Newspaper Association Better Newspaper Contest, her third such award in the past year.
Sattler, Southwest Kansas Group Publisher for GateHouse Media, won first place in the national competition for her editorial titled “Just scrap Koch-AFP postcards.”
The editorial called on readers to disregard deliberately misleading political postcards, a strategy launched in 2012 in Kansas, when the Koch brothers and Americans for Prosperity funded postcards to malign moderate state lawmakers in The Garden City Telegram’s coverage area and beyond who didn’t agree with the Kochs’ political agenda. Numerous moderate lawmakers were purged from the Legislature as a result. The editorial called on Kansans to reflect on history and dismiss the latest round of postcards.
The judge’s comments: “Forceful, concise writing — starting from the first sentence — taking a strong position and clearly stating the argument for it.”
With more than 2,300 members, the NNA is the largest newspaper trade association in the United States. Judges for the contest included active community newspaper editors and publishers; retired university journalism professors; and other retired or former newspaper professionals.
Sattler’s editorial was entered in the NNA contest’s division for The Telegram’s like-sized newspapers, both daily and nondaily. Second place in the division went to the Mount Desert Islander in Bar Harbor, Maine, and third to the Buffalo Bulletin in Buffalo, Wyo. Winners will be recognized in September at the NNA’s 132nd annual Convention and Trade Show in Norfolk, Va.
Sattler also recently was named an “Editorial Writer of the Year” for GateHouse Media, which owns more than 600 publications across the United States and publishes the most daily newspapers in the nation. Also, in 2017 she won first place in the Inland Press Association Newsroom Contest for Editorial Excellence for editorial writing in the competition for newspapers up to 10,000 circulation, both daily and nondaily. The Inland Press Association represents more than 1,000 daily and weekly newspapers in all 50 U.S. states, as well as Canada and Bermuda.
As Southwest Kansas Group Publisher for GateHouse Media, Sattler oversees The Telegram, The Dodge City Daily Globe, The Pratt Tribune, Kiowa County Signal and St. John News.
