Garden City Community College announced Friday that Kristi Tempel, the college’s director of marketing and public relations, has accepted a new job as a consultant for her family businesses.

She will transition to a part-time consultant position at the college.

GCCC Human Resources secretary Alexis Saenz will act as the interim point of contact for the college’s public relations, according to the release.

Tempel has worked with the college for four years, two as public relations director. She is the college’s fifth public relations director since Steve Quakenbush resigned in 2013 after holding the job for 25 years.

Tempel will use the extra time to help care for an elderly family member, according to the release.

“I want everyone to be aware, that this is a personal decision I made months ago. I have raised four kids and helped to put triplets through college. With my children graduating and moving into the workforce, I am now able to slow down and enjoy spending time with my family,” Tempel said in the release.

In the release, Tempel talked about how she and her children have benefited because of community colleges and how she’s proud of the successes she witnessed and helped promote across GCCC. She said her job has given her the chance to see “the great value (GCCC) is to the Garden City community and surrounding area,” and commended the “growth and vision” of the college’s administration.

“I have enjoyed this thriving atmosphere and have full confidence in the college’s administration and the Board of Trustees to keep moving forward to meet the needs of our students and the local community,” Tempel said in the release.

GCCC President Herbert Swender spoke fondly and appreciatively of Tempel.

“I have greatly valued all of the hard work that Kristi has done at the college. She has immensely improved our marketing and outreach across the states. We are excited that she will still be working with us as a part-time consultant, and we are excited for her new journey — she has earned it,” Swender said in the release.
