HAYS — A Garden City man was arrested Tuesday in relation to a fight Saturday night during a softball tournament in Hays.
Hays Police Chief Don Scheibler said Salvador Benitez, 34, was arrested in Garden City on suspicion of aggravated battery, with the assistance of the Garden City Police Department.
Police responded to the softball complex at 11:47 p.m. Saturday for a reported fight. The fight was over by the time police arrived, but one person had a broken arm and the suspect had fled the scene.
A 34-second video posted to Twitter corroborates information the police were able to put together. The video shows about a dozen players on the infield scuffling. A man in an orange shirt, who police have identified as Benitez, is seen picking up another man and throwing him to the ground, then kicking him in the face. Scheibler said the throw broke the man’s arm.
The tournament was an event of the United States Speciality Sports Association, which rented the ballfields, said Roger Bixenman, superintendent of the Hays Recreation Commission. He said the teams involved in the altercation were from Great Bend and the Dodge City area.
Benitez is being held in the Ellis County Jail on a 48-hour arrest warrant.
