LIBERAL — The Newton High School baseball team saw its season come to an end after a 4-0 loss to Liberal Tuesday in the semifinals of the Class 5A regional baseball tournament in Liberal.

The Redskins scored a run in the first inning, two in the third and a run in the fourth.

Liberal pitcher Braxton Hyde tossed a complete-game, five-hit shutout, allowing two walks with eight strikeouts.

Christian Malcolm took the loss for Newton, allowing three earned runs in 3.2 innings with five hits, four walks and two strikeouts. Sport Tegethoff finished the game, allowing two hits, two walks and a strikeout.

Dylan Thompson drove in two runs for Liberal. Javier Bojorquez went two for four with an RBI. Cesar Burciaga went two for three.

Newton ends the season 7-14. Liberal, 16-6, fell in the finals to Great Bend 2-0.
