The Newton High School girls’ swimming team kept up its strong start to the season, winning the eight-team Newton Invitational I Tuesday at the NHS pool.

It was Newton’s third win in four meets and Newton’s fourth meet in 13 days.

Newton topped Derby 318-262 for the team title. Andover was third at 250, followed by Hutchinson at 212, Rose Hill at 101, Salina South at 98, El Dorado at 82 and Salina Central at 40.

“We have a fabulous exchange student (Benedetta Biondi),” Newton coach Kim Powell said. “We have Addi (Schroeder), who came over from Hesston. We have a bunch of girls who have really worked hard. We have three freshmen from last year, who are doing a fantastic job as sophomores.”

Newton has already finished ahead of several top teams from last year, including Blue Valley Southwest, which took third in 5-4-3-2-1A at state.

“The girls are having a good time and are a lot of fun,” Powell said. “They are super competitive. They want extra yards. They keep asking for extra yards. They are getting tired. They cut some times, but not a lot. We expected this. After this week, we’ll have a little more time between meets.”

Newton has a co-operative agreement with Hesston this season, giving them Schroeder, a junior, and Rachel Teeter, a sophomore. Under KSHSAA rules, the two will swim as Hesston swimmers in the post-season.

The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Biondi, Annika Senn, Ashley Salgado and Schroeder won in 3:58.53.

Senn won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:11.97.

Schroeder won the 50-yard freestyle in 26.29.

Schroeder took second in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:40.86, a time cut of 4.14 seconds. Senn was third in 6:01.50.
