Lt. Col. Robert J. Darling, author of the book “24 Hours inside the President’s Bunker, 9/11/01: The White House,” will be speaking to Garden City High School students at 9 a.m. Friday in the GCHS auditorium.

Darling will be providing the keynote address at the 131st Garden City Area Chamber of Commerce Banquet on Thursday.

Most of the students at GCHS were not even born when the terrorist events of Sept. 11 took place. Darling will bring his unique perspective to the students on those historical events that took place that day.

On Sept. 11, 2001, Darling was working in the White House Military Office and initially was tasked to coordinate airlift assets for the president’s evacuation to an undisclosed site. However, he was quickly recruited to provide his military expertise and became a key liaison between the vice president, national security advisor and the Pentagon and worked directly with the National Command Authority to respond to the terrorist attacks.

Darling speaks to business and community leaders across the country on crisis management and the skills needed to be an effective leader in today’s world. You can read his full bio on his website at
