Cancer affects many people around the world, so the McPherson County Relay for Life team is working hard to raise awareness and put an end to the battles many area residents fight against the disease.

All funds raised through the efforts of Relay for Life teams go toward The American Cancer Society. This event is the signature fundraiser in the society’s fight to raise awareness and research a cure.

The event leadership team coordinates and is the backbone of the McPherson County Relay for Life event, which will be held from 4:30 p.m. to midnight on June 2 at McPherson College this year.

The kick-off meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 5 on the second floor of the Farmers Alliance education building, at 1211 N. Main St. in McPherson.

After the kick-off meeting, the leadership team will meet from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on the first Monday of every month; and team captains will meet from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., both at the Farmers Alliance education building.

“The group mans the whole event. We will meet prior to the team captain meetings and we get things rolling.

Then we get the team captains ideas on how to raise funds for the relay and we make things go smoothly," said Roxane Ayres, event and team lead for the relay for life.

Several positions are available on the leadership event team to choose from to assist in the event. Ayres also noted at least 10 people would be ideal to put everything together and are also looking for new faces.

"One would be a social marketing person, an luminaria who would line the track with white paper sacks that are dedicated to someone who has had cancer. We need a survivor lead and they help survivors register and get their shirt. Every year we recognize those survivors as well. We also need a team captain lead who would recruit new teams and team members," Ayres added. "We've had a few people that have left due to jobs and we're looking to add more."
