The Garden City Commission held its reorganization meeting on Monday, officially naming Roy Cessna mayor for the second time and ending terms on the board for commissioners Janet Doll and Chris Law, who did not seek reelection.
Newly elected commissioners Troy Unruh and Lindsay Byrnes will serve alongside commissioners Melvin Dale, Dan Fankhauser and Cessna. Cessna was appointed to a second term as mayor on Monday, having served a term previously from April 2014 to April 2015. Fankhauser was named vice mayor.
“We have a great city,” Cessna said during the first official remarks of his second mayoral term. “We should be proud of who we are and where we’re going in this community… We should be proud of the vision and the direction we’re going.”
Outgoing commissioners also made comments on their departures.
“I would like to welcome incoming commissioners Lindsay Byrnes, Troy Unruh and returning commissioner Melvin Dale to this incredibly dynamic organization,” Doll, who served for nearly five years on the city commission, said during her farewell. “Thank you Garden City for allowing me to serve you. It has been my honor and extreme pleasure to do so. I hope that I have fulfilled your expectations when you voted me in as a city commissioner of Garden City.”
“My time as commissioner has been rewarding and exciting,” Law, who has served for nearly seven years, said. “Has it been perfect? No, but pretty darn close, and for that I say thank you.”
Dale said he looks forward to working with Byrnes and Unruh.
“I may not agree with you, but I will work with you and we will get the job done for our city, and this is our city, and they are our families,” Dale said.
The new and reappointed commissioners both swore oaths of service after seats behind the bench were turned over by the departing commissioners.
As some of their first official actions, the newly reorganized commission proclaimed Jan. 8, 2018, as Janet Doll Day and Jan. 9, 2018, as Chris Law Day. Doll has served on the commission since April 2013 and served as mayor from 2015 to 2016. Law has served since April 2011 and served as mayor from 2016 to 2017.
