Gertrude Walker Elementary School will hold a Kansas Reading Roadmap LIFE graduation at 7 p.m. Monday in the gymnasium at the school, 805 W. Fair St.

There are six families that have successfully completed the program and will be participating in the graduation ceremonies. School district dignitaries along with city and state officials will be at the ceremony.

Kansas Reading Roadmap’s Literacy Integrated Family Engagement program, or LIFE, is a key component of the overall strategy for improving early literacy for children grades pre-kindergarten to third grade. LIFE facilitates emotional and academic experiences aimed at deepening children’s relationships with their parents, increasing their reading skills, and supporting a culture of literacy at home.

The LIFE program is part of the Kansas Reading Roadmap program that seeks to align proven reading models to achieve greater student achievement. The program looks at both the school day and out of school time to identify opportunities for reading improvement.

Five USD 457 elementary schools are involved with the program. The schools are Abe Hubert, Buffalo Jones, Florence Wilson, Gertrude Walker, and Victor Ornelas elementary schools.
