A Colorado man and woman were arrested Friday on multiple felony counts after attempting to evade police in Garden City.
Garden City police attempted to stop a white 2004 Lincoln driven by Jake Duran, 24, of Pueblo, Colo., in the 600 block of North Ninth Street on Friday afternoon after Duran allegedly committed multiple traffic violations. Duran then attempted to evade police, resulting in damages to two other vehicles. He was eventually arrested on allegations of multiple felony drug and gun counts.
At around 2:15 p.m. Garden City police pursued Duran after he failed to stop for them, and as the pursuit continued Duran ran a stop sign at 12th and Fulton streets, striking a blue Dodge truck traveling eastbound on Fulton. After the collision, Duran continued his attempt to flee, but his vehicle began to smoke and became disabled near the intersection of Eighth and St. John streets, according to police.
Duran reportedly turned into a parking lot at 400 N. Eighth St. and fled the vehicle while it was still in motion. The vehicle continued rolling through the parking lot and struck an unoccupied Honda Pilot.
Police continued pursuing Duran on foot and apprehended him after he ran into the Legends Beauty Salon, 109 W. Grant Ave., where he was arrested after a brief struggle, police say.
Duran’s passenger, Alexis Valverde, 21, of Pueblo, Colo., was arrested at the intersection of 10th and St. John streets without incident. She also had fled the vehicle following its collision with the parked Honda.
Police say no one was injured during the incident, but officers discovered a handgun, drug paraphernalia and multiple drugs, including methamphetamine and opiates, in Duran’s vehicle.
Duran was arrested and lodged in Finney County jail on allegations of felony interference with a law enforcement officer, possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, fleeing and eluding police, driving under the influence, possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of opiates.
Police discovered that Duran had a warrant from Pueblo for his arrest on allegations of possession of a firearm by a felon, assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a controlled substance and manufacturing a controlled substance.
Valverde also was arrested and jailed on allegations of interference with a law enforcement officer, possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of opiates and criminal use of a weapon.
