Both Maribel and Juan Garcia love Garden City, but felt the town needed more entertainment. That's why the married couple decided to open up Saints of Fun Paintball, a paintball center at 3535 Jennie Barker Road.
The business had its grand opening Friday.
“I figured bowling and movies can get old after awhile, so I wanted to open up something that everyone can play, can do,” Juan Garcia said.
Maribel Garcia said she has lived in Garden City since she was 10 and her husband has lived here since he was 12. They have seen the city grow.
“I think it’s a great city for families and growing up here, but there’s a lack of entertainment. Little by little, you see things starting up. I think it’s (entertainment) really important, especially for the youth and the families,” she said. “This is something that you can do with your children. This is something that you can do with your families, your friends. This can be a fun stress reliever, instead of being at home bored or getting into trouble because you don’t have anything to do.”
Saints of Fun Paintball currently has two parks. One park is made up of piles and stacks of tires throughout a field, along with old vehicles to hide behind for cover when paint-balling.
The other is made up of piles and stacks of tires, but also features stacked barrels and wooden structures for shelter.
There is also a large area shaded by a tent with tables and chairs if guests ever want to host birthday parties, corporate events, or just have large groups, Maribel Garcia said.
Juan Garcia said there also will be an area for those who don’t want to be in the park and shot at, so they can shoot the paintball guns at targets just for fun.
“We do have rental equipment. We have the guns, face masks and vests…” Maribel Garcia said. “If people have their own equipment they would like to use, they can bring it, and all they have to do is just purchase the paint from us.”
All participants must sign a waiver, Maribel Garcia said, adding that if a participant is younger than 17, their parent or legal guardian would have to sign a waiver, as well.
Saints of Fun Paintball the couple's first business venture. Juan Garcia works at TP&L while Maribel is a stay-at-home mom. They have four children.
“We’ve never owned a business before, so this is totally new to us,” Maribel Garcia said, noting that she expects a lot of youth to come out and play with their friends.
Maribel Garcia added that she and her husband eventually would like to add go-carts, rock climbing and maybe batting cages a few years down the road.
“We want to develop into something more in the future, but for now, we will start with what we have,” Juan Garcia said.
The business is closed Sundays and Mondays, and open only by reservations on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. On Thursdays and Fridays, Saints of Fun Paintball is open 9 a.m. to noon and 6 to 9 p.m., and on Saturdays, it is open 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m.
The business will be open year-round, weather permitting.
Prices on admission, rentals and paint vary and can be found on the business’ Facebook page, Saints of Fun Paintball.
