World Lion Day

What: Lee Richardson Zoo will be celebrating World Lion Day. Attendees can make a lion craft to take home, explore discovery carts and test their jumping ability to see how they compare to a lion. There will also be a keeper chat.

When: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, with the keeper chat at 11 a.m.

Where: Lee Richardson Zoo, near the lion exhibit.

Summer Soiree

What: The Big Brothers Big Sisters of Finney and Kearny Counties’ Summer Soiree will feature live comedy by professional comedian James Johann, an acoustic duet from Aaron and Bree Thompson, food, and entertaining auctioneers. The event will serve as a fundraiser for the organization.

When: 6 p.m. Saturday

Admission: Tickets $25 each.

Garden City Farmers Market

What: Each Saturday through Sept. 24, a variety of home-grown produce, hand-crafted items and homemade foods will be offered for sale.

Legacy Scholarship Run

What: Nearly 400 American Legion Riders participating in the American Legion Legacy Scholarship Run will be passing through Garden City on their motorcycles en route to the American Legion’s national convention in Reno, Nev. Area residents are encouraged to thank the riders for their service by lining Campus Drive near Garden City Community College and the First Assembly of God Church with American Flags.

Fulton House tours

What: The Finney County Historical Society has opened the historic 1884 William Fulton House, located just southwest of the museum inside Lee Richardson Zoo, for tours.

When: 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Church 50th Anniversary information

What: Bible Christian Church will celebrate it’s 50th year with food, fun, games, a helicopter dropping beach balls and a special church service.

When: 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. Sunday.

Where: Bible Christian Church, 1501 E. Mary St.

Syracuse River Run 

What: The 2017 River Run on the Arkansas River, which will serve as a fundraiser for the Syracuse eighth grade trip to Washington D.C. The event includes judging at the fairgrounds for the best decorated vessel, entry into the river, and presentation of winners. Tanks, paddle boats, rafts and kayaks are welcome. No motorized vessels are allowed. Tubing also is allowed but will not be judged for the contest. Personal flotation is required but not provided.

When: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. MDT Saturday. Judging starts at 11 a.m. at Big C’s Tire. River entry is between noon and 2 p.m. about two miles west of Syracuse on U.S. Highway 50. A raffle drawing and prize handouts will be from 3:30 to 4 p.m.

Cost: $5 per person who enters the river.

Chamber wine tasting

What: The Garden City Chamber of Commerce’s annual wine tasting event with a Route 66 theme. There will be 50 fine wines, hors d’oeuvres and desserts. There also will be “moonshine” samples, a beer garden and scotch and cigars on the patio.

When: 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday

Cost: $55 per person; tickets can be purchased at
