A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for later this month for a man charged with second-degree murder in the stabbing death of a 23-year-old Garden City man.
Alberto Tello, 23, 2914 Fleming St., appeared in court Tuesday alongside Chief Public Defender Ronald Evans before District Judge Ricklin Pierce. Judge Pierce scheduled Tello’s preliminary hearing for 9 a.m. Aug. 30.
Tello is accused of stabbing Carlos Romero on July 2 at Romero's residence, 508 W. Thompson St. Tello could face more than 51 years in prison if convicted.
According to police, Romero was having a party at his residence in the early morning hours of July 2 when Tello arrived. Police say a verbal altercation ensued between Tello and other attendees at the party, and Tello was asked to leave. Romero followed Tello outside to confirm he was leaving the party, and Tello turned around and stabbed him, police say.
Romero went back inside and told others at the party to call 911, and Tello fled the premises on foot. Police found Tello at his residence, hiding in a bedroom, and arrested him without incident.
