A Garden City woman and man are facing attempted second-degree murder charges after police say their failure to care for her 2-year-old son almost resulted in his death.
The toddler’s mother, Kiala Pollman, 26, and stepfather, Elias Allen, 31, both of 1602 E. Labrador Blvd., were arrested Friday and each are being held in the Finney County jail on a $100,000 bond. The Finney County Attorney’s Office has filed the attempted second-degree murder charges against them both.
Police say the couple neglected the child, who has special needs, resulting in the child being extremely malnourished and dehydrated.
The child requires special care and feeding routines and has since birth, and police say Pollman and Allen were not caring for him properly and neglected to get him medical care.
The Garden City Police Department was contacted on Sept. 9, 2016, by the Department of Children and Families and notified that the boy was admitted to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City with a life-threatening illness. The child has since been released from the hospital and is in foster care.
The subsequent investigation has lasted nearly a year.
