The condition of a Johnson City cyclist who was in critical condition after a car struck him in heavy fog Wednesday morning in Stanton County has improved to serious.
According to a Kansas Highway Patrol crash log, Candee L.C. Amerin, 49, of Johnson City was driving a passenger car eastbound on U.S. Highway 160 at about 7:58 a.m. when she struck Mark T. Stephenson, 60, as he passed in front of her on his bicycle from the shoulder of the road ahead of her. According to the KHP, heavy fog is believed to have been a factor in the accident.
The report noted that Amerin swerved to miss Stephenson, but she couldn't avoid him.
Stephenson was taken to Wesley Medical Center with incapacitating injuries. Amerin was unhurt, according to the KHP.
