Food Truck Friday

What: Garden City Downtown Vision and the Garden City Area Chamber of Commerce will host the second Food Truck Fridays, with an extended lineup of eating options and a beer garden as part of the Chamber’s August Business After Hours event.

When: Food trucks, 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Friday; beer garden, 5 to 7:30 p.m.

Benefit yard sale

What: A yard sale to benefit Tim Herrell, who has end-stage kidney disease. Proceeds from the yard sale will go to cover non-medical costs of travel and lodging before and after his anticipated kidney transplant surgery. There will be a live auction to include items donated from local businesses. Biscuits and gravy will be served Friday morning, and hot dogs and sloppy Joe's will be served for lunch on Friday. Baked goods will be sold.

When: starting 9 a.m. Friday and running through the day, and then 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday; live auction, 7 p.m. Friday; biscuits and gravy served from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, and hot dogs and sloppy Joe's served starting at 11 a.m. Friday.

Art Walk

What: Participants can come and go at their leisure at each art stop, which will feature work from the Garden City Arts July Drop-in Art program, to include mini canvases “planted” on stakes in the flower pots that line Main Street between Fulton and Spruce streets. Garden City Arts also is showcasing artwork by children who participated in this year’s summer art programs. Cupcakes and juice boxes will be served.

When: 4 p.m. to dark, featured work from the July Drop-in Art Saturday program; 4 to 6 p.m., feature work from the summer art program

Historic Walking Tour

What: The Finney County Historical Museum will provide a tour of historic downtown Garden City, where you can see and hear about the buildings, businesses and landmarks dating back to the late 1800s.

When: 7:30 p.m. Friday; tour will last about an hour

Where: Stevens Park

Cost: Tickets are $7 per person, with proceeds benefiting the Finney County Historical Museum. Tickets can be purchased at the Garden City Downtown Vision office, 120 E. Laurel St., between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

‘Aladdin Jr.’

What: “Aladdin Jr.,” presented by the Garden City Recreation Commission Junior Theater Program

When: 7:30 p.m. Friday, 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday

Where: Clifford Hope Auditorium at Horace Good Middle School, 1412 N. Main St.

Cost: Tickets can be purchased from cast members or at the GCRC activity center, 310 N. Sixth St. Children 10 and younger are $5; 11 and older are $10

 

Garden City Farmers Market

What: Each Saturday through Sept. 24, a variety of home-grown produce, hand-crafted items and homemade foods will be offered for sale.

When: 7 a.m. to noon Saturday

Where: Parking lot of Westlake Hardware, 1210 Fleming St.

 

Summer Sidewalk Sale

What: Downtown merchants will host their annual Summer Sidewalk Sale. It's also Shop Small Saturday in downtown Garden City, and in conjunction with both events, Garden City Arts will host the annual Sidewalk Chalk Contest. Downtown merchants will be sponsoring a free watermelon feed.

When: Summer Sidewalk Sale begins at 7 a.m.; Sidewalk Chalk Contest, 9 a.m. to noon; watermelon feed, 2 p.m.

Where: Summer Sidewalk sale, downtown Garden City; Sidewalk Chalk Contest, Stevens Park; watermelon feed, next to Kep’s Menswear.

 

Boy Scouts center

What: Ribbon cutting and grand opening for the Duane and Orvileta West Council Service Center, which will be the new home of the Boy Scouts of America Santa Fe Trail Council. There will be prizes and more at the event.

Fulton House tours

What: The Finney County Historical Society has opened the historic 1884 William Fulton House, located just southwest of the museum inside Lee Richardson Zoo, for tours. The Folk Victorian home will be open Saturday and Sunday afternoons over the summer.

When: 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Where: Southwest of the museum inside Lee Richardson Zoo.

 

Silver Screen movies

What: The Garden City Recreation Commission’s Silver Screen movies will feature two movies this weekend, “Grease” on Friday night and "Inside Out" on Saturday night. Those attending the free events are encouraged to bring a lawnchair and/or blankets and a snack.

When: At dusk (9 to 9:30 p.m.), Friday and Saturday
