A 26-year-old Colorado man was arrested Sunday morning on an allegation of driving under the influence after driving a vehicle into a utility pole in the 400 block of West Fulton Street.

According to Garden City police, Justin Cruz, of Broomfield, Colo., was westbound on Fulton Street in a 2011 Chevy Cobalt at about 8:43 a.m. Sunday, when he allegedly fell asleep at the wheel, left the roadway and struck a utility pole on the northeast corner of 11th and Fulton streets.

According to police, Cruz was uninjured but showed signs of impaired driving. After police arrested him and took him to the Finney County jail, he complained of injury and was evaluated by Finney County EMS.

Damage to the utility pole was estimated at $4,500, and traffic was re-routed for about three hours so City of Garden City crews could replace the pole. Cruz’s vehicle sustained extensive damage and was towed from the scene.

Cruz also was arrested on one count of driving without a valid license.
