A man from Plains died after a crash early Sunday morning outside of Meade.
According to a Kansas Highway Patrol crash log, Alton L. Willimon, 68, of Plains was driving a sports utility vehicle westbound on U.S. 54 at a high rate of speed when the vehicle failed to negotiate a curve to the right about three-fourths of a mile east of Meade at 2:26 a.m. The vehicle crossed the center line and went into the south ditch, then crossed U.S. 160. It landed in the south ditch, then vaulted over a fence line and landed nose-first. It flipped end-over-end and rolled one time, ejecting Willimon.
The vehicle came to a stop south of U.S. 54 facing southeast, where it burned completely.
Willimon was taken first to Meade District Hospital, then flown to the burn unit at Via Christi-St. Francis in Wichita, but Kansas Highway Patrol reported he later died.
An earlier version of this story said Willimon suffered incapacitating injuries in the crash. Kansas Highway Patrol has since updated the crash log to report Willimon died.
