John T. "Big John" McGrath, 78, of Goodland, died Friday, Feb. 21, 2014.

He was born Nov. 1, 1935, in Lamar, Colo., to Paul and Mary McGrath.

A former resident of Scott City, Mr. McGrath worked with farming and feedlots. He also delivered the Salina Journal to Goodland every morning for the past 16 years.

On Sept. 7, 1958, he married Avesta Miller in Holly, Colo. She survives. Other survivors include his children, Becky Young of Liberal, Sharon Bauer of Levant, Douglas McGrath of Belmont, Calif., and Janet Lawson and John McGrath Jr., both of Goodland; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and numerous stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Richard McGrath; and a sister, Marie Jones.

Funeral will begin at 1:30 p.m. MT Thursday at Bateman Funeral Home in Goodland. Burial will be at Goodland Cemetery.

Visitation hours are 2 to 7 p.m. MT Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials are to be designated later by the family, in care of the funeral home, Box 278, Goodland, KS 67735.
