Marvalena Kinder

DODGE CITY — Marvalena Kinder, 85, died Feb. 12, 2013, at Western Plains Medical Complex.

She was born April 10, 1927, in Magnolia, Mo., to Joseph and Nellie Blanche (Jett) Raker. She graduated from Magnolia High School and later earned a clerical business degree from Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg.

Marvalena married Otto Lee Kinder on Aug. 7, 1949, in Warrensburg. She and Otto celebrated 47 years of marriage until his death on Jan. 10, 1997. They moved to Dodge City in the early 1950s.

An active member of Grace Community Church in Dodge City, Marvalena was dedicated to helping others and strong in her faith. She taught first- and second-grade Sunday school for 40 years and was a member of the Christian Women's Club and a volunteer for R.S.V.P. She also enjoyed collecting dolls.

After working in food service at USD 443 for many years, Marvalena started a new career with Meals on Wheels where she worked tirelessly for another 23 years until her retirement just last year.

Marvalena was preceded in death by her parents, husband and her brother, Joe Raker.

She is survived by two sons and a daughter, David L. Kinder of Garden City, Carol Yvonne Buchheister and husband Jim of Lawrence, and Richard A. Kinder and wife Cheryl of Orange, Texas. Marvalena is also survived by her two sisters, Laura Barr of Odessa, Mo., and Jewell Monson of Raymore, Mo.

Marvalena had six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, at Grace Community Church with Pastor Kirk Larson presiding. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Dodge City. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City, on Thursday, Feb. 14, from noon to 8 p.m.
