A Syracuse teenager was killed Sunday night in a one-vehicle accident that occurred a quarter of a mile south of U.S. Highway 50 near Syracuse.
Laura Leyva Perez, 16, died of injuries she sustained after the 1999 GMC Suburban she was a passenger in lost control and flipped onto its roof.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, Cruz E. Garcia, 16, Syracuse, was driving the vehicle southbound on Barton Road at about 9:30 p.m. Sunday, when the vehicle fishtailed and slid on the gravel road. After being over-corrected, the vehicle entered the west ditch and the driver's side tires got caught in the ditch, causing the vehicle to roll and land on its roof.
Garcia and the other four passengers of the vehicle were not injured. The other passengers included Cesar Leyva, 14, Syracuse; Omar Miramentez, 14, Syracuse; Esau Moreno, 14, Syracuse; and Luis David Perea, 14, Syracuse.
None of the vehicle's occupants were wearing seat belts, according to the KHP.
