ULYSSES — Alice May Barnard, 93, died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2013, at her home in Wichita, following a lengthy illness with congestive heart failure.
She was born Jan. 7, 1920, in Oilton, Okla., to Anna May Howze Messick and Oldom Taylor Messick. She graduated from Tonkawa High School in Tonkawa, Okla., in 1938.
She married Leo Earl Caywood in 1938. She later married Walter John Paul Klein. He preceded her in death. She married Royce Elton "Barney" Barnard in Hebron, Neb. He died in 1973. She also was preceded in death by two daughters, Alice Lorene and Paulette Mae; 10 siblings, Virginia Davis, Florene Hale, and Lena, Lloyd, Thelma, Doretha, Faye, Richard, Leonard and Raymond Messick; and a grandson.
A former resident of Ulysses, Mrs. Barnard moved to Wichita in 2002. She had worked at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses.
Survivors include a daughter, Elaine Craft of Wichita; two granddaughters; three grandsons; two stepgrandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church, Ulysses. Burial will be at Ulysses Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association, in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant, Ulysses, KS 67880.
