Abdelwahed 'Del' Zhiri
Abdelwahed "Del" Zhiri, 79, died Thursday, Oct. 3, 2013, at his home in Lawrence, after an extended illness.
He was born July 1, 1934, in Mechra Bel Ksiri, Morocco, to Zoubida Challal and Ahmed Zhiri.
Mr. Zhiri spent the first 26 years of his professional career as teacher, educator and administrator such as the director general of Higher Education and Scientific Research in Morocco. He then spent 20 years as a senior project officer and consultant for the preparation and implementation of several World Bank education programs. During this time he traveled extensively to work with Departments of Education in many countries to improve their educational systems. In his retirement, he wrote about the importance of education in the developing nations. A Garden City resident from 1968 to 1974, he was an associate dean of academics and an instructor at Garden City Community College.
Survivors include his wife, Carol; three daughters, Nadia Zhiri of Garden City, Jalila Milne and Karima Zhiri; three granddaughters; three brothers; and three sisters.
Prayer services will be held at the Islamic Society of Greater Kansas City at 1:45 p.m. Sunday. Burial will take place in Morocco.
A gathering of remembrance for friends and family will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at his home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to UNESCO "Educations for ALL" or UNICEF's Educational Programs.
