Ray Kennedy, 66, of Leon, died suddenly of heart failure on Thursday, Oct. 4, 2012, while on family vacation in Estes Park, Colo.

He was born April 27, 1946, in Oklahoma City, to V.C. and Kathleen Kennedy. He attended primary and secondary schools in Sterling, Colo., graduated from Northeastern Junior College and attended Colorado State University.

He married his wife of 38 years, Marium Ann Beasley, on Oct. 14, 1973. They lived in Lakin for 20 years before moving back to Sterling in 2003 and then to Leon in 2008 to be closer to their children and grandchildren.

Mr. Kennedy was active in the Masonic Lodge serving as Master in the Syracuse, Lakin and Leon Lodges. He also was an active member of the Butler County Shrine Club, Krazy Klowns and the Van Driver's units within Midian Shine. He enjoyed helping children and served as a van driver transporting children and their families to the Shriner's Hospital in St. Louis. He loved his family and spent numerous hours helping his children in their youth with 4-H projects and working in his workshop with his son. He relished spending time with his four grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Marium, of the home; a brother, Larry Kennedy and his wife Loretta of Bayard, Neb.; his children, Belinda Fortin and her husband Jason, Charity Kennedy and Rye Kennedy, all of Wichita; four grandchildren, Cade, Autumn, Conner and Cameron; and seven nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday in Lakin at the Memorial Building. The service will be followed by a dinner, open to all, and a celebration of Ray's life.

In lieu of flowers, please send memorials to benefit the Shriner's Hospitals for Children. Submit to Midian Shrine Center, in care of Ray Kennedy Memorial, 130 N. Topeka St., Wichita, KS 67202-2406.

Chapel of the Roses Mortuary in Lakin is in charge of the arrangements.
