LAKIN — Edward Bemis Jr., 78, of Lakin, died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2014, at Kearny County Hospital in Lakin He was born May 31, 1935, in Lakin, to Edward LaVaughn "Jim" Bemis Sr. and Theo Leora Wells Bemis.

LAKIN — Edward Bemis Jr., 78, of Lakin, died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2014, at Kearny County Hospital in Lakin He was born May 31, 1935, in Lakin, to Edward LaVaughn "Jim" Bemis Sr. and Theo Leora Wells Bemis.

After graduating from Lakin High School, Mr. Bemis moved to Liberal, where he worked at a service station. He later moved to Garden City, where he worked for Geier Electric for 17 years. He returned to Lakin and worked for the City of Lakin for 17 years before his retirement. Mr. Bemis served as a volunteer fireman in Lakin for many years and was a member of the Sportsman Lake in Lakin. After retirement, he enjoyed growing gourds and making all kinds of crafts from them. He painted and made the Santa Fe Trail signs for the city in addition to other signs he created and painted. He also enjoyed fishing, model trains, the outdoors, riding motorcycles and spending time with his grandchildren.

On Feb. 2, 1974, he married Anna Ruth Livingston in Garden City. Survivors include a daughter, Kimberly Neal and husband Jason of Haysville; a son, Edward Bemis III and wife Rykki of Lakin; two brothers, Allan Bemis of Lakin, and Richard Bemis of Buffalo, N.D.; and six grandchildren, Jarett Neal, Kaylee Neal, Jett Neal, Rylie Bemis, Eli Bemis and Reed Bemis. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Dean Bemis and Donald Bemis; an infant sister, Sharon Elizabeth Bemis; and another sister, Donna Douglas.

Funeral will begin at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Lakin United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Lakin Cemetery. Visitation hours are noon to 8 p.m. Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home in Lakin.
