Theater productions, GCCC rodeo on tap here

Art, theater and rodeos dominate events in Garden City this weekend.

The Garden City Recreation Commission will present "Steel Magnolias" this weekend. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the State Theatre. A special preview performance is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. tonight for those who may not be able to afford $10 tickets.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students and Arts Angels, available at GCRC, 310 N. Sixth St., or from cast and crew. Tickets will also be available at the door.

Directed by Brian Seagraves, cast members include Melissa Gallegos, Erin O'Neal, Melissa Fulton, Alison Chambers, Jeanil Hain and Misty Baldwin.

GCCC dinner theater production, "Shotguns for Wedding Bells," written and directed by Phil Hoke, is set for 6:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday in the auditorium of the Pauline Joyce Fine Arts Building. Reservations are required. Admission is $20 per person, or two for $35, including dinner. Ticket and reservation information is available from 7:30-11 a.m. and noon to 3:30 p.m. weekdays from fine arts office, which can be reached at 276-9540.

Seventh Annual Six by Six Art Show and Sale: Offering original works by students and established area artists, all priced at $20 and each executed on ready-to-hang six-inch blocks of wood, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in Mercer Gallery in the west wing of the Pauline Joyce Fine Arts Building at Garden City Community College, 801 Campus Drive.

The 46th Annual Garden City Community College Intercollegiate Rodeo rides off at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Horse Palace indoor arena on the west end of the Finney County Fairgrounds. It is hosted by GCCC Rodeo Team and features more than 400 college and university competitors from Kansas and Oklahoma. Attendees may pay admission at the gate.

Also happening this weekend:

* The Garden City Family YMCA will be hosting the 7th Annual Carl Myers Racquetball Tournament, starting today and running until Sunday. The competition offers $10,000 in prize money to winners.

* The Knights of Columbus Hall, 205 N. Eighth St., will be hosting a pancake breakfast fundraiser from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday. All proceeds will go to the summer youth baseball programs offered by the Finney County Baseball Association.
