Endowment auction, walk/run, prom this weekend

Events this weekend in Garden City include the Garden City Community College Endowment auction, a USD 457 run, and the Junior/Senior prom.

The 35th Annual Scholarship GCCC Endowment Auction will be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Finney County Exhibition Building. Doors open at 6 p.m. No one under 21 will be admitted.

This year's theme is "Wild, Wild West." Admission is $25 in advance at ticket locations located at Keller Leopold Insurance, Kinney Glass, Skeeter's Body Shop, Goldworks, GCCC Endowment Association and Lewis Motors Co. For more information, call 276-0412 or visit www.gcccendowment.org

On Sunday, USD 457 will host its second annual Couch Potato to 5K and 1 Mile Walk/Run. The race starts at 2:30 p.m. at Lee Richardson Zoo, with registration from 1:30 to 2:15 p.m. near the main walk-in gate of the zoo. The start and finish line will be at the main entrance at the zoo.

Staff members who have signed up in advance will receive a T-shirt, number and official time.

On Saturday, the Finney County Young Professionals are partnering with the Garden City Habitat for Humanity to help them raise the roof and walls of home No. 7 that has been built in Finney County.

The event is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the house, 508 Fifth St., across from Sunnyland Bed and Breakfast. RSVP to Shawna Deal at shawnadeal@catholichealth.net, or call 805-9959.

The Garden City High School Junior/Senior prom will be held Saturday in the GCHS practice gymnasium, 2720 Buffalo Way Blvd. The theme for this year's gala event is "A Night in St. Tropez" with the dance beginning at 7 p.m.

The decorated gym will be open for public viewing from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday. Prom pictures will be taken from 5 to 6:45 p.m. and 7 to 10 p.m.

Those who come for pictures before 7 p.m. will enter through the weight room door. That door will be locked at 7 p.m. Students will enter through the practice gym for pictures after the dance starts.

For the dance, students will need to enter the school through the training room entrance on the north side of the school. Students must have their ticket with them to be allowed in.

Parents, family members and friends may view the Grand Promenade as each couple arrives in the main gymnasium. Viewers are asked to enter through the north student entrance go upstairs and enter the gymnasium, as is done for basketball games. A $1 per person donation will be accepted at the door.

Visitors are asked not to move from their place unless they are leaving. Visitors may sit in the gymnasium, beginning at 7 p.m. The Buffalo Broadcasting System, cable channel 21, will be televising the promenade.

Parents who would like to donate snacks or bottled drinks for the event may bring those items to the school Friday evening or from 4 to 6 p.m. on Saturday. For more information, contact Anna Silva, 290-5086 or by email at asilva@gckschools.com.
