Area schools qualify wrestlers for state meets

Twenty-six Garden City Telegram area high school wrestlers qualified on Saturday for their respective state tournaments at three sites.
At Augusta, in Class 4A, Ulysses qualified six wrestlers while finishing in fourth place in the team standings with 127 points. Hugoton advanced three wrestlers at the same site, and all nine of those wrestlers will compete in the 4A state meet beginning Friday morning at the Salina Bicentennial Center.
In Class 3-2-1A, area schools competed in two separate regional qualifiers — Scott City and Wichita County at the Norton regional while Sublette, Cimarron, Holcomb and Lakin were competing at the Garden Plain regional.
Scott City, the 2012 3-2-1A state champions, advanced four wrestlers to the Friday-Saturday state meet at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays while Wichita County qualified two. The Beavers placed fourth in the team chase with 106 points.
At Garden Plain, Cimarron led the way with four qualifiers, Sublette advanced three, Holcomb and Lakin two each.
From all sites, there were four area champions.
Holcomb's Keegan Amos at the 3-2-1A regional in Garden Plain. Amos captured the 132-pound title with an ultimate tiebreaker 2-1 decision over Adrian Lange of Lyons.
At Norton, Scott City's Alex Kough won the 126-pound division with a convincing 9-2 decision over Alec Hager of Norton. Kough had earlier won the Rocky Welton Invitational in Garden City in late January.
Also at Garden Plain, Sublette's Wyatt Brown captured the 113-pound division with a pin of Ethan Hertzler of Halstead at 0:38 while Cimarron's Tanner Smith earned the 160-pound crown with a pin of Dalton Gonzales of Lakin at 2:38.
Other Scott City qualifiers and their placings were James Jurgens (3rd) at 120 pounds; Warren Kropp (3rd) at 160 pounds; and Michael McEachern (4th) at 285 pounds.
Wichita County's two qualifiers were Dylon Nighswonger (3rd) at 106 pounds and Brice Mason (4th) at 195 pounds.
At the Garden Plain regional, other stat qualifiers included Andy Davis (3rd) of Sublette at 120 pounds; Misael Banderas of Holcomb (2nd) of Holcomb at 138 pounds; Aidan Shaughnessy of Cimarron (3rd) at 170 pounds; David Baca (4th) of Lakin at 170 pounds; AJ Cooper of Cimarron (2nd) at 182 pounds; Austin Flores of Cimarron (3rd) at 220 pounds; and Laramie Lumley (3rd) of Sublette at 285 pounds.
In the Class 4A Augusta regional, there were no individual champions, but five wrestlers competed in the finals, all finishing second.
That group included Patrick Weaver (2nd) of Hugoton at 145 pounds; Lawson Fiss (2nd) of Hugoton at 152 pounds; Armando Sandoval (2nd) of Ulysses at 182 pounds; Bradley Campbell (2nd) of Hugoton at 195 pounds; and Otto Orosco (2nd) of Ulysses at 220 pounds.
Earning third-place finishes were JoAngel Cortez of Ulysses at 138 pounds; Bryce Rodriguez of Ulysses at 145 pounds; and Diego Maravilla of Ulysses at 195 pounds. Fourth-place finisher was Luis Mendoza of Ulysses at 126 pounds.
