The St. Catherine Hospital Development Foundation has announced the purchase of digital mammography equipment for St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

"It is a blessing to our community that the hospital and St. Catherine Hospital Development Foundation were able to purchase two machines, one at the hospital and a second at the Women's Clinic. We are thankful to the community for supporting St. Catherine Hospital in delivering outstanding Digital Mammography Services" said Charles Claar Jr., St. Catherine Hospital Development Foundation chairperson.

Screening mammograms play a central role in the early detection of breast cancer, capturing images electronically. Radiologists are able to view and manipulate images using a computer screen.

"Digital mammography is a more effective screening tool in diagnosing women with breast cancer. Specifically, women with dense breasts, and women who have not yet gone through menopause will greatly benefit from this new technology," St. Catherine Hospital radiologist Dr. Soen Liong said. "For our patients, these services will provide women currently traveling outside the region the opportunity to receive state-of-the-art digital mammography right here in Garden City."

The American Cancer Society recommends that women over age 40 have mammograms every year and continue to do so as long as they are in good health.

"We strive to provide area residents with the highest quality care available. Our digital mammography program is just the next step in providing the community the services they want available locally," said Scott Taylor, president and CEO of St. Catherine Hospital.

Digital mammography services will be available at St. Catherine Hospital's Women's Clinic, 115 N. Main St., and the Imaging Department located inside St. Catherine Hospital. Women interested in scheduling appointments should contact their primary care providers.

Funds for the purchase of digital mammography were raised from individual community donations, the Leave a Legacy Foundation and St. Catherine Hospital annual galas.

The public may join St. Catherine Hospital donors and staff in celebrating a ribbon cutting and blessing of St. Catherine Hospital's digital mammography program at 4 p.m. Friday in the Imaging Department of St. Catherine Hospital.
