GCCC joins Campus Compact

Garden City Community College has joined the Kansas Campus Compact.

The compact is an affiliated group of a dozen colleges and universities working to enhance service learning and civic engagement in higher education, as well as breaking barriers between colleges and communities.

The compact, established at the Kansas Statehouse in 2003, includes four community colleges, four private colleges and four state universities, including Kansas State, Fort Hays State and Pittsburg State universities, as well as the University of Kansas.

GCCC's admission brings the compact's membership to 13, according to Joshua Mosier, Manhattan, compact executive director. Other institutions include Butler, Hutchinson, Johnson County and Seward County community colleges, along with Baker University, McPherson College, Southwestern College and the University of St. Mary.

Based in Manhattan, the compact is focused on five goals for the period that began in 2010 and will conclude in 2014. Those include brand demonstration, institutional structure development and what the executive director termed "engagement impact assessment." Objectives also include addressing critical Kansas needs and strengthening of organizational capacity. In addition, the compact recently created an updated strategic plan for the years of 2011-16.

The Kansas organization belongs to a national coalition of more than 1,100 colleges and universities, founded in 1985 and known as the Campus Compact.

The compact has been credited with efforts toward college and university service in health care, environmental concerns, homelessness, hunger, education, literacy and senior citizen services.

Meats team fourth at High Plains

The 2012 Garden City Community College meats judging team ended the season with a fourth-place finish at the recent Cargill Meat Solutions High Plains Contest in Plainview, Texas, along with a series of individual honors.

GCCC concluded with reserve national champion status Nov. 3 and 4 in the competition categories of beef grading and lamb judging. The group also finished second in beef grading, with an 81-point improvement; second in lamb judging, with a 26-point improvement; and fourth in pork judging, up by 42 points from the previous event.

In addition, GCCC earned fourth in beef judging, up by 86 points; fourth in the placings category, with a 170-point improvement; fourth in total beef, up 158; and fourth in questions.

In individual competition, the Cargill event was the last regular season contest for three GCCC judges, including Matt Schneider, Garden City; Shelby Hacker, Garden City; and Caitlyn Souza, Gustine, Calif., though each may still participate next April in a judging meet conducted in Lubbock, Texas, by the North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture. Team member Sarah Lightner, Garden City, began competition this fall and will continue on GCCC's 2013 team in the spring semester.

Souza finished with her highest score of the year in Plainview, at 921, earning seventh overall and taking second as reserve national champion in lamb judging, as well as fifth in total beef and seventh in beef grading and questions.

Hacker earned 13th overall, scoring 875 points while taking eighth in beef grading and ninth in placings. Meanwhile, Lightner took 14th overall, with 870 total points, coming home with 11th in both beef and lamb judging. Schneider ended up 20th overall, earning 854 points and taking seventh in lamb judging and 12th in placings.

Collegiate meat judging competition, sanctioned by the American Meat Science Association, involves skills that are applicable in the food processing and production industry. Students from community colleges and universities evaluate cuts and carcasses using official U.S. Department of Agriculture quality and yield grades.

FHSU TECA fares well at conference

The Technology Education Collegiate Association at Fort Hays State University won first-place in manufacturing, teaching lesson, problem solving and technology challenge at the annual Four State Regional Technology Conference in Pittsburg.

Jose Ibarra, Ulysses sophomore, is on the team.

The team competed against the University of Wyoming-Casper, the University of Arkansas, Fay, and Pittsburg State University in various events that included manufacturing, problem solving, live communications and technical presentation.

TECA also won second-place honors in the live communication event and third place in the transportation contest.

The competition is a prelude to the national spring conference of the International Technology and Engineering Educators Association. The national conference is in Columbus, Ohio, in the spring.
