Senior center pinochle

Charles Maxfield won high in the five tables of senior center pinochle played July 2 at the Senior Center of Finney County, 907 N. 10th St. Bob Ellis took second place. Third went to Betty Schreibvogel.

Genealogical society

Margy Stewart, professor emeritus from Washburn University, will speak on "The Work Of Rural Kansas School Children — Perspective On Historical Life In Kansas" from 2 to 4 p.m. July 17 at The Learning Center, 308 Frontview in Dodge City.

The Kansas Genealogical Society in partnership with the Kansas Humanities Council is sponsoring Dr. Stewart, who will present a perspective on the value of children's work for the survival of families on Kansas homesteads, farms and ranches. She will include new research on the history of American childhood, African American children in Kansas settlements and information on the orphans resettled on Kansas farms.

Dr. Stewart is co-founder of Prairie Heritage Institute, a nonprofit corporation devoted to preserving the tall grass prairie and the culture of the Flint Hills.

The session is free and open to the public.

Senior center double pinochle

Shirley Howell won high in the four tables of senior center double pinochle played Monday at the Senior Center of Finney County, 907 N. 10th St. Second place went to Jean Wildeman. Mary Ann Binns placed third.

Go-Getters 4-H

The June meeting of the Go-Getters 4-H Club was held at Lee Richardson Zoo, with six members and four adults in attendance. Roll call was answered by stating what club members were doing this summer. Last month's minutes were read by Alexa Lightner and approved. The treasurer's report was given by Abigail Lightner.

Club members discussed the upcoming events for the Finney County Fair along with projects that will be entered. Club leader Edith Wyatt went over requirements for stall reservations and informed members who are showing livestock to complete the LQA at the Finney County Extension Office.

The next meeting will be July 21 at the Finney County Fairgrounds.

Vern Wilson won high in the two tables of senior center pitch played Tuesday at the Senior Center of Finney County, 907 N. 10th St. Jerry Wallace took second place. Third went to John Bunnell.
