Whatever the reason, seniors should understand that if they are struggling with the cost of their prescriptions, help is out there. The federally funded program known as Extra Help is available to persons with Medicare. If you (or your parent or older relative) has income below $17,235 this year ($23,365 for a married couple) and less than $13,300 ($26,580 for a couple) in other resources, not including a house or car, be sure they've applied. A broad swath of the elderly population meets these thresholds and could receive a partial or full Extra Help subsidy.
You can apply for Extra Help by going to www.medicare.gov and applying online. Or you can call Social Security at (800) 772-1213 and request a paper application or you can call the senior center at 272-3620 and request an appointment. We can help you complete the application. It usually takes six weeks to get an answer so don't wait. Call now for an appointment.
Thanks for help
