Berning to retire from U.S. Army

Sergeant First Class Rebecca Berning is retiring after more than 28 years in the U.S. Army.

She is the granddaughter of Hazel M. Litton of Garden City; and the niece of Leanna and Lester Webb and Larry and Judy Litton of Holcomb. She graduated from Kearney (Neb.) High School.

Berning's specialty in the U.S. Army was as a senior human resources sergeant. She is currently assigned to the G-1 Division West, First Army, Fort Hood, Texas, and resides in Killeen, Texas.

She served in the following overseas assignments: South Korea, Germany and Operation Provide Comfort in Turkey during Desert Storm Desert Shield, Hawaii.

Berning earned two Meritorious Service medals, five Army Commendation medals, six Army Achievement medals, eight Army Good Conduct medals, one Army Reserves Component Achievement medal, two National Defense ribbons, a Southwest Asia Service Ribbon with Bronze Star and a Global War on Terrorism Service Ribbon.

Her awards also include the Korean Defense Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with Bronze Hour Glass, three non commissioned officers Professional Development Ribbon with numeral three, Army Service Ribbon, three Overseas Ribbons with numeral three and the Kuwait Liberation Medal.

A retirement ceremony is planned for Jan. 31 in Fort Hood. Her official retirement date is June 1.
