LULAC awards local scholarships

The Garden City LULAC Council had its 18th Annual Scholarship banquet and reception on April 13 at Garden City High School.

Garden City Community College Endowment Scholarships were awarded to Ivett Ortega, Gabriela Molina, Jesse Sanjuan and Itzel Moreno-Rodriguez. LULAC national scholarships were awarded to Alexander Hurtado, Ofelia Carrillo, Efren Frayre and Jose Alcantar. Those students will be attending other institutions in the fall.

An additional scholarship was awarded to Kyshia Prieto. The scholarship was donated by Grace Webdell, who is a charter member of the LULAC Memorial Scholarships.

Five students received memorial scholarships. Juan Martinez was awarded the Joe and Lydia Gonzales Memorial Scholarship. Marina Garcia was awarded the Angie Gonzales Posey Memorial, and Abby Vidana received the Enrique Ramirez Memorial. The two Mary Otero Memorial Scholarships were awarded to Sarah Stucky and Ricky Carrasco.

The council presented outstanding school administrator plaques to Buffalo Jones Elementary School principal and guest speaker Rafaela Solis, GCHS Principal James Mireles, and GCHS wrestling coach Carlos Prieto.

Dr. Sonia Esquivel, former GCHS student, HALO member and LULAC scholarship recipient, served as the emcee.

Past LULAC member and former Garden City Mayor Dennis Mesa read a proclamation letter from Gov. Sam Brownback congratulating the local LULAC council.

Outstanding male student of 2013 was awarded to Frayre, and outstanding female student was awarded to Moreno-Rodriguez.

The 2013 Man of the Year was Mireles and Woman of the Year was Sylvia Ramirez, LULAC president, from Horace Good Middle School.

The local LULAC chapter was started in 1995 by Lydia Gonzales to encourage Hispanic students to further their education.

O'Rourke inducted into honor society

Tiffany O'Rourke, Holcomb, is one of 17 Washburn University School of Business undergraduate, graduate and post-baccalaureate students recently inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma international honor society.

She was recently awarded the Dale C. Marcoux Scholarship and has previously received the Cleora Nemec Business, Finnup and Phi Theta Kappa scholarships. A graduate of Garden City Community College, O'Rourke is a senior and is pursuing a bachelor of business administration degree, with a concentration in accounting.
