GCCC second in Academic Quiz

The Garden City Community College Academic Excellence Challenge team competed recently in a National Academic Quiz Tournament qualifying event at Cloud County Community College in Concordia.

The tournament hosted nine Kansas community colleges including Allen County, Cloud County, Coffeyville, Dodge City, Garden City, Hutchinson and Pratt, plus two teams from Cowley County. The field of entries also included two Missouri schools, Mineral Area College of Park Hills and two teams from St. Charles Community College.

The event was won by a one-person team from St. Charles.

GCCC team members include Tim Herrmann, Tim Cobb, Alyssa Davis, Kayelani Irvin, Larissa Hall, John Fairbanks and Bryan Lunzmann, all of Garden City.

The team encountered some predictably tough competition in the recent National Academic Quiz Tournament in Marianna, Fla.

One of only 24 teams in the nation to qualify in the Community College Division, GCCC finished in 18th place. St. Charles finished as champion at the national level. Other schools in the top five, all located in the Southeastern U.S. included Northeast Alabama Community College, Rainesville, Ala. in second place, and Snead State Community College, Boaz, Ala., finishing third. Host school Chipola College, Marianna, Fla., tied with Valencia Community College, Orlando, Fla., for fourth place.

Team members included Herrmann, Cobb, Davis, Irvin, Fairbanks and Lunzmann, all of Garden City.

GCCC will host the AEC State Regional Tournament on the campus March 27. The state tournament will take place in Salina April 23-24.

Schultz on Dean's List at Ottawa

Ottawa University has announced its Dean's List for the fall 2009 semester. Requirements for the Dean's List include being a full-time student at Ottawa University, having earned a minimum of 24 semester hours over the preceding two semesters, and having a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.

Area students making the Dean's List include Logan M. Schultz of Garden City.

Teeters graduate from Southwestern

Southwestern College December 2009 graduates have been announced with more than 150 students eligible to participate in Commencement exercises in Winfield on May 9.

John P Teeter, Johnson City, graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in pastoral studies. Lexy Jade Teeter, Ulysses, graduated with a bachelor of science degree in biology.

Irsik-Good earns degree at Kaplan

Kaplan University celebrated the graduation of its winter 2010 class during a ceremony on Jan. 30.

Area students to gradute from Kaplan University include Sarah Irsik-Good, of Garden City. She was awarded a bachelor of science in legal studies.

GCCC competes in debate event

Four Garden City Community College students took part recently in the Kansas State Individual Events Collegiate Speech and Debate Championships, hosted by Barton County Community College in Great Bend.

The tournament was the largest in the history of KASIE, with a field of 13 teams from two- and four-year colleges and universities across the state. KASIE President Craig Brown, director of forensics at Kansas State University, attributed much of the growth of this year's event to increased participation by community colleges.

There were six teams in the four-year university division and seven in the community college division.

Gabby Stout competed in the Dramatic Interpretation and Persuasive Speech categories, while Dora Herrera competed in Prose Interpretation and Persuasive Speech categories. Janet Huerta, took part in the Poetry Interpretation and After Dinner Speaking categories while Joann Gonzalez competed in the Program of Oral Interpretation and Critical Analysis categories.

Huerta advanced to the final round of competition in After Dinner Speaking. Her presentation on Nature Deficit Disorder was awarded a sixth-place medal. Gonzalez also reached the final round in the Critcal Analysis category, examining a recent AIDS awareness advertising campaign and its implications. She finished in fifth place.

Stout and Herrera are freshmen. Huerta and Gonzalez are sophomores. All are from Garden City.

Southwestern Dean's Honor Roll

Top scholars at Southwestern College in Winfield have been announced with the release of the Dean's Honor Roll for the fall 2009 semester. Full-time students who earned grade-point averages of at least 3.70 on a 4.0 scale were eligible for the honor.

Area students included on the list are: Taylor Kinnamon, Copeland; Molly Komlofske, Holcomb; Cassidy Reimer and Lexy Teeter, both of Ulysses.
