Sunshine Gals
Cleo Merrill was hostess for Tuesday's meeting of the Sunshine Gals, with 10 members in attendance. Her devotions centered around Lent and being still, resting in the Lord. Her second devotion related that in the storm of life, we meet Jesus, that fear and faith are not compatible. The question for roll call was "What storms of life make you afraid and what has made you calm?"
Merrill's program, "How Easter Works," was about pre-Easter and Easter. She stated that after the Sabbath, Easter is the oldest Christian observation. She gave history and interesting facts about Shrove Tuesday, Holy Week, Palm Sunday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday. She noted that it is a worldwide celebration and she gave customs for celebrating in various countries such as Bulgaria, Mexico, the United States and England.
Because of her Greek heritage, Merrill told of many of the Greek traditions that were a part of her upbringing, including the traditional Greek bread with a red egg in the center, roasted lamb as the traditional Easter dinner meat, a late-night church service on Saturdays, which ended after midnight when the priest would declare "Christ is Risen." She concluded the program with a traditional Greek Easter game where you would tap another's egg (either the nose end or the bottom end). Each time an egg was tapped, the participants would say (in Greek) "Christ is Risen." Whomever ended up with one end not cracked was the winner. That was Ina Mae Delinger who received the hostess gift as her prize.
The next meeting will be April 13, with Alberta Mouser as hostess.
