Garden City High School’s softball team did exactly what coach Trina Moquett had been hoping for in the early part of the 2016 season.

The Lady Buffs wasted little time in teeing off on Goodland’s starter Kaitlyn Daise in the opener, scoring 11 runs in the first two innings en route to a shortened 5-inning 12-1 rout.

They did the same thing in the nightcap, getting 11 runs once again in the first two frames, this time finishing off the five-inning mercy-rule victory by a 17-3 margin.

The pitching victim for the Lady Cowgirls in the nightcap was Kylee Martin.

“It was just an overall really good day,” Moquett said in a telephone interview Tuesday night. “We had good chemistry. At-bat wise, pitching-wise, we were clicking on all cylinders.”

Seven different Lady Buffs hitters had RBIs in the opening victory, with Shai Cartmill and Jenna Greenlee leading the way, each getting a pair of hits and three RBIs. Rylee Crawford had a pair of runs driven in.

By virtue of getting the big lead, and getting it early, Moquett was able to provide freshman Hailey Dart with a chance to come in to relieve her older sister, Abbie.

Abbie had pitched the first three innings of the opener, giving up just one hit while striking out seven and walking none. Hailey went the final two innings, giving up three hits, one run while striking out two and walking none.

“Hailey did a nice job of throwing her curveball today, and it was just nice to be able to get her in with that kind of run support in a not-so nervous situation,” Moquett said. “She didn’t have to be perfect, but she got us out of the inning.”

In the nightcap, the Lady Buffs wasted little time in putting their sixth straight win into the books.

Three runs in the first, and then an eight-run uprising in the second made things easy for both Abbie and Hailey Dart on the mound. Abbie pitched the first four innings and Hailey came in to relieve her sister and pitched the fifth.

The Lady Buffs brought out the big bats with Dart hitting a home run, a double and drove in 7 runs to pace a 15-hit attack. Alyssa Long had three hits and three RBIs while Jordan Terrones had two hits and three runs driven in.

Abbie Dart picked up her sixth win against no losses while recording seven strikeouts against no walks, getting nicked for two hits and one run. Hailey Dart yielded two hits and a pair of runs, striking out two and walking one.

“I thought we had a lot of quality at-bats,” Moquett said. “I feel like the team is coming together. We swung at pitches we wanted. Abbie was in the zone, and Hailey did a nice job for us.”

The Lady Buffs will be on the road to Clay Center for a scheduled 4:30 p.m. start to a doubleheader.

Notes: The Lady Buffs will be credited with an 8-0 victory over the Ulysses Lady Tigers. A week earlier, the second game of a doubleheader at Ulysses was halted when a dust storm blew through and forced officials to halt the game.
