"We are Meals on Wheels, so no senior goes hungry" is the theme of the Beef Empire Days Poker Run hosted by the Senior Center of Finney County benefiting Meals on Wheels. This fundraising event will be held on Saturday. As one of the most popular poker runs in southwest Kansas, we will be spreading the word about the face of senior hunger in our neighborhoods.
Each day, the largest volunteer network in America delivers more than a million meals to senior citizens. In 2011 in Finney County alone we served more than 39,000 meals to seniors, both homebound with the Meals on Wheels program, and with Friendship Meals served at the senior center. We provide nutritional support to help older persons stay independent in their own homes, and good nutrition pays dividends in the future for overall good health.
We have many challenges in the nutrition programs:
* Increasing food costs
* Increasing fuel costs
* Increasing client base as baby boomers turn 60
* Increasing competition for funds and budget cuts
We invite you to join us for the poker run which begins with registration and breakfast at 7:30 a.m. The participants will leave Garden City at 8:30 a.m. and travel to Sublette, to Dodge City and to HorseThief Reservoir where they will be able to visit the lake and see the facilities before returning to Garden City. Lunch will be prepared by Webb's Food Crew and BBQ. Come have a good time and help a worthy endeavor.
Eagle Scout Zach Champlin made free wooden platforms for recliners and glider rockers. These platforms add four inches to the height of the chair making it easier to get in and out of the chair.
There are still a few platforms available. If you would like to obtain a platform and have Zach install it for you, call Barbara Jensen at 272-3620.
Thanks for help
This year is the 40th anniversary of Meals on Wheels in Garden City. Many thanks to the First United Methodist Church volunteers and Duane Riley who delivered Meals on Wheels last week.
