Saturday, Jan. 12

State debate tournament: Garden City High School is hosting the 109th Kansas State High School Activities Association state debate tournament for classes 5A and 6A. Saturday’s competition starts at 8 a.m. The bracketed tournament will be open to the public with rounds at 12:30 p.m., 2:45 p.m., 5 p.m., 7:15 p.m. and the finals at 9:15 p.m.

Day of Service: As part of the Kelly Rogers inaugural 2019 festivities, communities across Kansas are organizing service projects as part of a statewide Day of Service. At Patrick Dugan's Coffee House, 301 N. Main St., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., participants will be collecting supplies and donations for Mosaic's group homes, selling tickets for the Finney County Humane Society's annual fundraiser and collecting grocery vouchers and donations for Oasis of Peace's shelter for women escaping sex trafficking.

 

Sunday, Jan. 13

Music program: The High Plains Country Music Fiddlers, Pickers and Singers will have its regular monthly program at the Memorial Building in Lakin. Signup will start at 1 p.m., and the program is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. All area musicians are welcome. Contact Curtis Young at (620) 355-6410 or Ruth Romesburg at (620) 276-8498.

 

Tuesday, Jan. 15

Music program: Willis Pracht will be singing and playing guitar at 7 p.m. at Garden Valley Retirement Village, 1505 E. Spruce St. The program is free and open to the public.

Evening at the Museum: The Finney County Historical Museum series will feature “From Honduras to Kansas," with Garden City resident Oscar Rivera presenting his story of immigration to the U.S. The program starts at 7 p.m. at the museum. Attendees may bring their own dinner, and the museum will provide beverages and dessert.

 

Wednesday, Jan. 16

Knowledge at Noon: Tips for managing life after retirement will be the topic of the Finney County Extension Office’s Knowledge at Noon program, scheduled for noon at the Extension office, 501 S. Ninth St. in Garden City.

  

Thursday, Jan. 17

Career fair: Garden City High School will host its Freshman Career Fair from 8:50 to 10:30 a.m. to help freshmen select a career academy they will follow over the next three years. Presenters will speak with students about what day-to-day work looks like in the different academies, the education path necessary to reach different careers, the benefits and drawbacks of the career and any advice they may have for students interested in their career field. Saturday, Jan. 12

Drop-in Art Saturday: Drop in at Garden City Arts, 318 N. Main St., from 1 to 3 p.m. and enjoy multiple art-making stations suitable for the whole family. All ages are welcome. This month's theme is Frank Lloyd Wright. Cost is free.

 

Monday, Jan. 14

Garden City Arts meeting: The annual meeting for Garden City Arts is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the art center, 318 N. Main St.

 

Tuesday, Jan. 15

Canvas+Paint: This beginner's class, held from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at Garden City Arts, 318 N. Main St., allows participants to follow step-by-step instructions to recreate paintings. For ages 14 and older. Cost is $25 per person, $20 for GCA members

 

Thursday, Jan. 17

Blushing Artiste: Come and have a glass of wine and light hors d’oeuvres from 7 to 9 p.m. at Garden City Arts, 318 N. Main St., while creating a painting that you can take home. Must be 21 or older. Cost is $35 for non-members; $30 for GCA members. To reserve a spot, contact the gallery at (620) 290-9700.

 

Saturday, Jan. 19

Mini & Me: Come and bond with your child while painting from 1 to 2:30 p.m. or 3:30 to 5 p.m. at Garden City Arts, 318 N. Main St. Ages 5-plus. Cost is $30 per pair ($25 for members).

 

Monday, Jan. 21

Eagles Auxiliary fundraiser: The Eagles Auxiliary of Wheatlands Aerie 3124 fundraiser for the Memorial Foundation and Auxiliary Benefit Fund, starting at 5:30 p.m. at the Eagles Lodge, 2603 N. Taylor Ave. The fundraiser will include a meal of ham and beans, cornbread, dessert and drink, followed by a Quartermania at 6:30 p.m. featuring Partylite. The meal costs $8 for adults, $5 for children 3 to 10, and children under 3 get in free. A second helping costs $4. A $5 entry fee for Quartermania buys a bidding paddle, goodie bag, and entry into the door prize drawing.

 

Monday, Jan. 28

CPR class: The Auxiliary of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Wheatlands Aerie 3124 is sponsoring a CPR class, presented by the Garden City Fire Department, starting at 6:30 p.m. The free class will be held at the Eagles Lodge, 2603 N. Health Department and WIC

Hours at the Finney County Health Department, 919 Zerr Road, and WIC are 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday; closed on Friday.
