Continuing its improvement from Week 1 of the high school football season, Holcomb coach Jerry Johnson was happy with his Longhorns’ performance Friday night in a 37-0 shellacking of the Kinsley Coyotes.

Five different Longhorns scored touchdowns in rolling to their second win of the season against a season-opening loss to Class 3A power Hoisington.

“We played a good game and the kids played hard,” said Johnson of his team’s road victory against the Coyotes. “We were sharper both offensively and defensively. We got some guys healthy and that helped a lot.”

The Longhorns powered up their running game, amassing 432 yards on the ground and 66 through the air for their best offensive output of the young season.

“Our kids came off the ball and it was really improved,” Johnson said of his line play. “The offense clicked and we wanted to establish certain plays and stay with the power running game. We made a good step from the Sublette game (12-6 overtime win in Week 2.”

Trey DelaRosa scored on a 75-yard run while quarterback Logan Singhisen raced in from 47 yards away. Matt Pfeifer scored on a 24-yard run, Levin Koehn from 19-yards out and Jose Munoz on a 49-yard scamper. Juan Santos booted a 31-yard field goal in the third period to close out the scoring for the ‘Horns.

“Everyone did a good job and I’m pleased with the improvement,” said Johnson.

The Longhorns will return home next Friday to host Class 3A area rival Scott City, The Telegram’s No. 1-ranked team. The Beavers, 3-0, defeated Class 4A Ulysses Friday night, 27-0. A year ago, Scott City handed the Longhorns their only two losses of the season, including a 19-0 first-round playoff setback.
