Fifteen southwest Kansas high school wrestlers, including four regional champions, will begin their quest for state championships today when they travel to the Class 4A state tournament in Salina and the Class 3-2-1A state meet in Hays.
The Ulysses Tigers were the top area wrestling team by qualifying seven to the Class 4A state tournament in Salina at the Bicentennial Center.
Leading the way was 220-pounder Otto Orosco, who claimed the regional title on Saturday in Colby. Orosco, who has a 29-3 record, will open against Chris Betzen of Andale, who is 15-19.
Other Ulysses wrestlers qualifying included Diego Maravilla, runner-up at 195 pounds; third-place finishers Mario Rodriguez at 132 pounds; Bryce Rodriguez at 145 pounds and Juan Anguiano at 152 pounds. Also qualifying for the Tigers after fourth-place finishes were Zach Miller at 120 pounds and Luis Mendoza at 126 pounds.
Scott City's Beavers had two wrestlers finish among the top four at the Colby regional, with James Jurgens and Warren Kropp placing third in the 126 and 170-pound weight classes.
Hugoton's Bradley Campbell was the lone Eagles' wrestler to qualify, earning a third-place finish at 195 pounds.
In Class 3-2-1A, there were three regional champions and they will be among the chief contenders when that state tourney begins Friday morning at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays.
South Gray's Zach (32-4) at 285 pounds, AJ Cooper of Cimarron (27-5) at 195 pounds and Wichita County's Brice Mason (33-3) at 182 pounds all claimed regional titles.
Also qualifying for the 3-2-1A state with third-place finishes were Colton Northrup (28-9) of Wichita County at 195 pounds; Jared Burrows of Lakin (26-15) at 182 pounds; and Junior Torres (20-5) of Sublette at 106 pounds.
Class 4A first-round matches begin at 10 a.m. in Salina while the Class 3-2-1A meet begins at 9 a.m. There will be championship quarterfinals, first round of the consolation bracket and then the championship semifinals later today.
Saturday's schedule will begin at 9 a.m. for both classifications. Championship matches will begin late afternoon or early evening, depending on the finish time of the consolation finals at all sites.
